In 2020, following a heartbreaking series of FDNY EMS suicides, the EMS FDNY Help Fund set out to find a confidential counseling partner to support the mental health needs of EMTs and Paramedics during an unprecedented time. While inspired by the NYPD’s Finest Care model, the team ultimately partnered with Hands on Health, an organization using EMDR therapy via Zoom – one of the most effective, evidence-based treatments for trauma and PTSD. This session explores how that partnership was developed, the lessons learned in reducing barriers to care, and how the program evolved to meet the ongoing needs of NYC’s EMS professionals.
